Fragments From Travels Eastward

Found fabrics and ceramic wares, steel, and mixed media; 2012

Nostalgia and regret live contradictorily in our memory of the American pioneer. As a descendant of the generation of Americans who conquered the western plains and participated in the colonization of America’s expansive lands, I retain a sense of ungroundedness. This ungroundedness is apparent in our interior environments, which barrow and recontexualize foreign patterns and motifs.

In this work I have mixed, morphed, reused, and redistributed culturally suggestive patterns and iconography, distorting the specificity of the materials. The camping gear is designed to camouflage one against the backdrop of excessive patterning that accumulates in our homes.
