In The Burn Scar, I faced the loss of my childhood home in the Marshall Fire with a journalist’s instincts. While capturing the emotional toll the fire took on our family and the community, I also questioned developing narratives about the fire’s spread, and the need for a swift recovery.  The series is full of moments of grief and realization, as my family and I developed understanding through conversations over the mic.

The Story of Tanasi documents the efforts of a coalition of farmers and environmentalists to halt the construction of the Tellico Dam– the Tennessee Valley Authority’s last hydroelectric dam. In the first test of the Endangered Species Act in the Supreme Court they successfully blocked the completion of the dam – temporarily. The series gets at something about why rural communities distrust governmental bodies today.
